A Port Byron man has turned himself in to New York State Police for allegedly leaving the scene of a fatal accident in 2021.
In a news release Thursday, police said that Rocco A. Stanley, 41, of Port Byron, has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, a Class D felony.
The accident took place at about 9:45 p.m. Feb. 9, 2021, on Route 31 between Mentz Church Road and Old State Route 31 in the town of Montezuma. Police said Stanley was driving a black Dodge Journey SUV westbound when he struck a pedestrian, Donald Condes, 52, of Auburn. The victim was found lying in the road, where he had been struck by two additional vehicles, and pronounced dead at the scene.聽
State police said its Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Auburn has spent the time since pursuing numerous leads, following up on tips received through the New York State Intelligence Center and conducting multiple interviews. The investigation led police to identify Stanley as the driver. After turning himself in, he was transported to the Cayuga County Jail for centralized arraignment.聽
