Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, chips to the green on the 17th hole during the third round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Oak Hill Country Club on Saturday, May 20, 2023, in Pittsford, N.Y.
The PGA Championship, one of golf's major tournaments, will return to upstate New York in the next decade.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and the PGA of America announced the PGA Championship will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, a Rochester suburb, in 2035.
It will be the fifth time Oak Hill has hosted the PGA Championship. The tournament was last played there in 2023, when Brooks Koepka won the Wanamaker Trophy, which is presented to the champion.
The 2035 tournament will be supported by $3 million in grants from Empire State Development, the state's economic development agency.
"Oak Hill has long proven itself as a premier major championship venue, with the East Course presenting a stern challenge that consistently produces memorable moments," said Don Rea Jr., president of the PGA of America.
Oak Hill Country Club President Ron Billitier added, "The East Course, our membership, and the Greater Rochester community welcome the opportunity to test the world's best golfers in an iconic and world-class setting here at Oak Hill. Having recently hosted our fourth PGA Championship on the restored East Course, we're confident our fifth will set a new standard and honor a worthy champion."
The return to Oak Hill was announced along with two other tournaments that will be played in New York. Bethpage State Park will host the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in 2028 and the 2033 PGA Championship.
The KPMG Women's PGA Championship was last played in New York in 2015, when Westchester Country Club was the host. From 2010 through 2014, the tournament was held at Rochester-area golf courses.
"New York state is further establishing its reputation as one of the best golf destinations in the world by welcoming the PGA of America for this marquee lineup of elite golf competition," Hochul said in a statement. "The announcement underscores the attraction of New York's world-class venues and our ability to host major sporting events, which in turn boost local economies and highlight our great state."
The PGA Championship at Oak Hill in 2023 generated an estimated $190 million economic impact.Â
The tournaments were announced before Bethpage State Park hosts the Ryder Cup, an international competition between the United States and Europe. The three-day event will be held from Sept. 26-28.
