Angelo D'Angelo, the original owner of Angelo's Pizza, still likes to come in nearly every day to be in his former pizzeria. D'Angelo moved to America from Italy in 1949 and first opened up a pizzeria in Brooklyn before moving to Auburn and opening Angelo's in 1960.
The Cultural Italian American Organization will honor a local pastor and pizzeria founder at its annual Christopher Columbus Day Recognition Dinner Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Springside Inn.
The dinner will honor the Rev. Vasile Colopelnic of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and Angelo's Pizza founder Angelo D'Angelo, the organization said in a news release.

Since being assigned to the church in 2012, Colopelnic has "set a standard of dignity with deep love for his Ukrainian people, with commitment and dedication to have the parish flourishing, striving to improve on many levels," the organization said. He has also personally helped bring many Ukrainian refugees to the area during the country's war with Russia.

D'Angelo, who came to America from Sicily, has shown "hard work and persistence to thrive" since his arrival. He opened Angelo's on East Genesee Street in 1960.聽
"Work ethics and determination were the force behind Angelo, to serve generations in our community, enjoying his charms and delicious pizza, still serving to remain a legend," the organization said.
The family-style dinner will begin with cocktails at 5 p.m. at the inn, 6141 W. Lake Road, Fleming.
